ICHTYOL. Poisson téléostéen dont l'espèce la plus courante (Tarpon atlanticus) qui vit à l'embouchure de certains fleuves des États-Unis, notamment en Floride, peut atteindre deux mètres de long et est très recherché pour ses larges écailles argentées. Après quarante ans, les plus chanceux commencent à aller pêcher le tarpon à Key West (MORAND, New-York, 1930, p. 278).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1907 (Lar. mens., t. 1, p. 111). Empr. à l'angl. tarpon (1685 ds NED), peut-être du néerl. tarpoen, d'orig. obsc. (v. NED et HÖFLER Anglic. 1982).
